The Trap of “Non-Sick”

One of the problems of talking to people about their health is that many of us have different ideas of what “healthy” means. In my system, we look at optimal health as a lifestyle, not a destination. It’s being as healthy as you can and making the daily choices that promote longevity over disease.

Unfortunately, the idea that “if you’re not sick, you must be healthy” is still prevalent. That’s how much of the medical world saw it too, but that’s changing. In the last few years, medical research is starting to validate what the Habits of Health Transformational System has been preaching for a decade: non-sick and healthy are vastly different states of being.

This is the difference between surviving and thriving. Just because you are not sick today does not mean that you are on a path toward a longer life. 

Non-sickness is like purgatory. It is caused by eating an excess quantity of nutritionally barren, calorie-rich unhealthy food which overworks the pancreas and facilitates your body’s storage of fat. Non-sickness is a state in which your muscles become weak and flabby, you don’t get enough sleep, and you’re always stressed.

Non-sickness invades your thoughts and feelings and takes the joy out of your days. It’s a state that leads you to progressive dependence on medications to relieve symptoms that are merely your body’s way of telling you you’re not healthy. If you drove your car off the showroom floor and on your way home the oil warning light came on, would you cut the wire and keep driving? No, you would take it straight back to the dealership.

When it comes to our health, we ignore warning lights all the time. We cover them up with bottles of Tylenol. We drink extra cups of coffee. 

By concealing symptoms, you are ignoring physical and mental signals that something is wrong. 

If any of this sounds familiar, please don’t worry. You’re not alone. Close to 90 percent of our population falls somewhere in this non-sick category. The good news is that if you make the decision to change, this non-sick state can be overcome, and you can usually reach optimal health in a relatively short period of time. 

Ask yourself:

  • Is your health improving every day?
  • Are your daily habits creating greater health and vibrancy or draining your battery and putting you on an accelerating path toward disease?
  • Are you already in a non-sick or sick state?

The answers will tell you whether you’re on the path toward illness or health. What if you’re already descending to a state of disease? Is it too late? Not at all.

Teaching you about the idea of non-sick and asking you to assess where you are today helps you to frame your journey. You have the power to create change in your life, to change your path, to switch from moving toward sickness to moving toward optimal health.
