For those to the North, this winter has been particularly harsh. With freezing temperatures and lots of snow, it can be easy to feel like hibernating until spring arrives. But, staying active and healthy during the cold months is possible—and important.
My daughters and I enjoy skiing every winter. For the last several winters, thanks to the Habits of Health, I have enjoyed heli-skiing! But your winter activities don’t have to be as adventurous. You can stay active and healthy during the winter by choosing activities that engage your body and burn calories.
For example, ice skating for just 13 minutes can burn about 100 calories. It’s a fun way to enjoy the season and get your body moving. If you love the outdoors, just 11 minutes of snowshoeing can have you burning those 100 calories in no time. And don’t forget about shoveling snow, a chore that most of us dread, but can work up a sweat!
Thriving through the cold.
While winter can offer many ways to burn calories and add movement, heading out in the colder months comes with some unique challenges. To help you stay safe and comfortable here are some important precautions to keep in mind:
- Be weather-ready. Dress according to the weather conditions. Layering can be helpful, and don’t forget to wear a hat and gloves!
- Watch your step. Wear boots or shoes with treads when you’re outside and try to avoid walking on ice. Going on a hike? Bring walking poles to help maintain balance.
- Stay hydrated. You may not feel thirsty when the weather is colder, but it’s important to stay hydrated. Bring a bottle of water with you when going head out.
- Listen to your body. Cold weather can cause your arteries to contract, putting you at risk for a cardiac event, especially if you are doing something strenuous like shoveling snow.
If you prefer to stay indoors during the winter, take a walk around the mall to help you stay active without having to brave the cold or head over to your local pool. Swimming is a full-body workout that keeps your muscles engaged and your heart rate up, making it a great choice during the winter months. Plus, it’s easy on the joints, which is great if you’re looking for a low-impact way to stay active.
Stay healthy and energized this winter.
Winter weather can be an easy excuse to slip back into the Habits of Disease because the environment has a big impact on the choices we make. But, winter months can offer plenty of fun activities to keep you moving. So get out there and start moving today! Whether you’re bundling up for outdoor fun or hitting the pool, there’s no reason to let the cold weather slow you down.
