Secret Weapons for Sustainable Weight Loss

05.15.25 |

The Habits of Health approach to Optimal Health and Wellbeing doesn’t just help you lose a few pounds, it teaches you how to build a permanent strategy for long-term health. This shift in mindset is the key to creating a lifestyle that supports your goals, not just temporarily, but for life.

One of the ways we help you do this is by making small, meaningful changes throughout your day. Whether that means taking the stairs instead of the elevator or setting your phone down an hour before bed, these small changes work together to help you create Optimal Health and Wellbeing—step by step!

For example, it’s easy to assume the amount of food we are served is the amount we should eat. But the truth is, your body should determine how much you need. Eating until you’re satisfied, not overly full, and leaving a few bites on your plate can help you eat fewer calories each day. Small steps like this, repeated over time, add up! Another key strategy? Rethink the way you serve your food at home.

The power of the plate.

In the early 1980s, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) introduced dietary guidelines you may remember—the USDA Food Pyramid. It divided food into six categories, but it was eventually phased out in favor of a simpler visual tool: MyPlate. The idea was to give Americans a clearer picture of what a balanced meal should look like.

The Habits of Health Plate System builds on that same concept—but it’s even easier to use and understand:

This system helps you monitor and manage your energy intake while ensuring a healthy, well-rounded diet. It focuses on balance and proportion, using four core food groups: vegetables, fruits, proteins, and grains. By using your plate as a guide, you can learn proper portion sizes and eat in a way that supports your long-term health goals. Why you should reach for a 9-inch plate.

We eat with our eyes before we ever take a bite. A large plate can distort our sense of what an appropriate portion looks like. That’s why using a 9-inch plate can be one of the most powerful tools in your kitchen.

Swapping out your standard 11 or 12-inch dinner plate for a 9-inch can help you eat more mindfully, feel more satisfied, and allow you to quickly judge your portions without disrupting your routine. This may seem like a small step, but over time, selecting healthy portion sizes and proportions will become second nature.

What’s truly amazing is how quickly these small changes start to influence other areas of life. As you become more intentional about what you eat, you may notice improvements in your energy, focus, and emotional wellbeing.

This is how real, lasting change is built—one mindful choice at a time.

Weight loss doesn’t happen overnight—neither does lasting health. By adding new healthy habits to your routine, you’re investing in your future. Whether you’re in Phase 1 or transitioning into maintenance, the Habits of Health system gives you the tools you need to build real, lasting change.
