The world we live in has a tremendous influence on our behavior, shaping the choices we make and how we respond to challenges. By nurturing our relationships and supporting others, we can create a positive environment that benefits ourselves and those around us—and it’s a great way to build our Habits of Healthy Surroundings!
Whether you offer a smile to a stranger, lend a helping hand to a friend, or call a family member to say hello, these small actions have the power to lift our spirits, reduce stress, and create stronger, more meaningful connections with others.
Here are some easy ways to spread kindness throughout your day:
- Call or reach out to a family member or friend. Is there a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while or a family member you’ve been meaning to catch up with? Reach out to someone important to you and say hello, or invite them to go on a walk or have a cup of tea.
- Hold the door for someone. A small and thoughtful gesture like holding the door open for someone can quickly brighten someone’s day. It’s such an easy thing to do, and it can leave a lasting impression.
- Send an unexpected note. Who doesn’t love a surprise note or text? Whether it’s a handwritten letter or a quick “thinking of you” message, taking time to let someone know you care is a simple but heartfelt way to spread kindness—especially if it arrives in the mail!
- Pay it forward. Next time you’re in line at a coffee shop, let someone go ahead of you or consider paying for the person behind you at the drive-thru. This random act of kindness can create a domino effect, where others feel inspired to do something kind for someone else.
- Help a neighbor. Do you have a neighbor who could use a hand? Offer to water their plants, pick up their mail, or help them carry groceries. Not only do these small acts create a stronger sense of community, but they’re also a great way to add Habits of Healthy Motion to your day!
- Give a stranger, co-worker or friend a genuine smile. Sometimes, a smile is all it takes to turn someone’s day around. Smile, give a friendly wave, or even offer a hearty “hello” to passersby.
We live in a chaotic world where it can be easy to feel overwhelmed, distracted and disconnected. By spreading kindness in these small—yet impactful—ways, we not only help others feel great, but we can lift our own spirits too!
