Water is Your Secret Weapon

01.21.21 |

One of the first Habits of Health we work on is drinking your recommended daily amount of water, which is about 8 glasses. Like all habits, this can take practice, but it’s often one of the most accessible changes to make on your journey. You get a quick win for building the habit, and you also get the benefits of proper hydration.

Our bodies depend on hydration for nearly every aspect of our health, but here are some of the major rewards Habits of Healthy Hydration unlock for you:

  • Improved appetite control
  • Enhanced mental clarity
  • More energy
  • Flushing toxins

We simply function better when we get the hydration we need. If you’re on your journey to optimal wellbeing, you have heard this before, but this habit can also be a tool that helps you throughout your day. I’ve found it helpful in my life, and the coaches and clients in our community have found similar success with using hydration in other areas of their lives.

Here’s how water can help you that you might not have considered. Take a drink:

  • If you get a craving. Sometimes our brains can misinterpret a need for water as hunger or as a craving. Take a big drink of water when you feel tempted. If it doesn’t solve the hunger feeling, it at least gives you an extra moment to Stop. Challenge. Choose.
  • If you are facing a difficult choice. Whether it’s a craving or a temptation of another kind, use your water to slow down the moment, giving you time to reflect.
  • If you are in a challenging situation. If I feel my lizard brain starting to react in a tense meeting or in a hard conversation, I take a drink of water to pause those feelings and to recenter myself.
  • If you need to stand up more often. If you work at a desk for most of the day, your Habits of Healthy Hydration can be what gets you up every hour, using the walk to the sink or the water cooler to add more motion to your day.

Any of these tips can turn into big wins, especially if they help you build more Habits of Health along the way.

If you are on your way to building Habits of Healthy Hydration, what have you learned that you can share with the community? How did you build the habit and how has it helped you on your journey?
